The Head of Communications at Mary's Meals will raise awareness of our work within the UK to attract new supporters, develop relationships with existing supporters, and to ensure the values of the organisation are upheld and promoted in all communications activities. Responsible for managing the communications team, which may also include volunteers.

Reporting to the director of communications, you will be comfortable working at a senior level to achieve success and will be experienced at managing relationships at all levels. The communications team lead on mass marketing activities (including campaigns) and the supporter engagement team focus on building personal and local relationships, to ensure as many people as possible can hear about and engage with our work. It will be important to develop good working relationships with the head of grassroots engagement and the head of major giving and partnerships, in particular.

We are recruiting for an amazing Director of Communications to lead and develop our global communications strategy to inspire and grow our movement across all mediums.

We are currently feeding 1,504,471 of the world’s poorest children, every School day, in 18 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Communications is at the heart of everything we do, and this critical role is key to our ongoing mission. Reporting to our CEO, you will have responsibility for overseeing all digital, editorial, content and internal communication activities within Mary’s Meals, and key priorities include:

• Developing and implementing a global communications strategy, embedding communications best practice across the Mary’s Meals movement

• Developing and maintaining relationships with all Mary’s Meals Affiliates, providing support in the creation of bespoke and impactful campaigns and building in-country capacity

• Developing and delivering an internal communications plan that ensures effective information sharing across the global family

• Providing strategic and operational leadership to the communications team, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement

With relevant communications experience, ideally within a global or international environment, you will be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to our vision, mission and values. Skilled in managing brand positioning and messaging for an organisation, you will also be able to demonstrate:

• Relevant experience of developing and implementing innovative communications strategies and projects coupled with the ability to translate these into actions and activities

• Proven staff management experience and the ability to lead and develop high performing teams

• The ability to effectively engage with and manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

• A strong vocational attitude that shows competence, commitment and contribution to the global movement

People Assistant

The Operations Support Officer will provide a back-office support function regarding facilities management, development of systems and processes, implementation of the health and safety management system, logistics and administration. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting colleagues in the implementation of systems and processes.
  • Undertaking agreed audits of our charity shops, communicating with colleagues on the timetable and type of audit and feedback any identified non-compliance or required improvements.
  • Providing support and training to employees and volunteers in our shops and to those who operate material aid collections and loadings.

Working closely with the Director of Supporter Engagement and Income, the role will support and lead on Supporter Engagement strategy development and implementation.

A large part of the role will involve leading a team of Supporter Engagement Managers who have significant responsibilities in prioritising the growth and nurturing of the volunteer network and our support across demographics and groupings, through management of their teams. This involves overseeing the attraction of new supporters, developing of relationships with existing supporters, and coordinating, empowering and inspiring our volunteers.

Working at a senior level, the Head of Grassroots Engagement will lead by example, encouraging consistently effective and efficient service across a UK-wide team, and ensuring that our staff, supporters and volunteers are recruited, inducted, trained, supported, recognised and retained in line with Mary’s Meals values.

Communications Officer

Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities, where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education.

Our idea is a simple one that works. We provide one daily meal in a place of learning in order to attract chronically poor children into the classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty.

The Communications Officer works as part of the communications team to raise awareness of our work within the UK in order to attract new supporters and develop relationships with existing supporters, while ensuring the values of the organisation are upheld and promoted in all communications activities.

The role includes responsibility for developing dynamic content and engaging with different target audiences, including the media, supporters, donors and people new to Mary’s Meals.

You will work closely with supporter engagement colleagues to ensure a consistently integrated approach.

Principle duties include:

  • Support the communications team to maintain the high public profile of Mary’s Meals by developing and placing stories in the media.
  • Build strong relationships with the media in Scotland and the UK.
  • Utilise a range of digital platforms to engage UK supporters, including Mary’s Meals’ social media channels, email marketing system and website
  • Support the donor and volunteer experience and increase engagement through the creation of meaningful content in keeping with Mary’s Meals’ distinct storytelling style.
  • Contribute to the creation of creative campaigns and content that tells the Mary’s Meals story, building support for our vision.
  • Plan, develop and produce compelling supporter resources, including flyers, posters, infographics and emails.
  • Ensure all communications activity accurately protects the reputation of Mary’s Meals and promotes our brand values, style and key messages.
  • Liaise with colleagues in Mary’s Meals International (MMI) to secure case studies and develop inspiring stories from our school feeding programmes for digital, print and broadcast platforms.
  • Perform ad hoc duties as required by the communications team to support the department.
