Families are referred to Govan Help’s family support service via several partner agencies including education, health and social work as well as self referrals and you may work together to assess and support families needs. Your role will vary depending on the unmet needs of the family you are supporting. We are based in the heart of Govan and the role is delivered flexibly from our base, in families homes and in the Govan community to meet the diverse needs of the Govan families.

You will be responsible for a caseload of families who require intensive support, design and deliver group work programmes, and other general aspects of service delivery in relation to the communities needs. Our core hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm but there may be some occasional requirement to work flexibly in the evening or at weekends to meet the needs of the service and carry out any other reasonable duties as required.

Govan HELP has exciting development plans for the future, and we are looking to recruit new trustees to our Board, strengthening governance to help lead the organisation through the next phase of our development.

Govan Home and Education Link Project (Govan HELP) is a local Family Support charity based in the heart of the community in the Govan area of Glasgow. Our services aim to support children and families from the local area to overcome problems, build resilience and confidence, and achieve overall improvements in the quality of family life.

Trustees have an important role at Govan HELP. They share responsibility for governing us as a charity, setting our strategic aims and directing how we’re run on a day-to-day basis. Trustees’ activities also include vetting and administering funding applications and representing us at events. The ultimate goal of Trustees is to ensure that everything we do maximises the benefit for our service users — that is, families in Govan.

We are a registered charity, so Trustees must ensure we comply with current charity laws and guidelines as set out by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). You may find it helpful to look at OSCR’s guidance for charity trustees.

We aim to have a Board that is representative of our diverse stakeholder base and anyone can apply who believes they will add value to the charity. The role of a Trustee demands commitment, but it’s also stimulating and very rewarding!

This year, we are looking to recruit up to five Trustee positions to join the Board at Govan HELP.

Govan HELP is a small, locally based, family education support charity, established in 1996, that aims to improve the educational attainment, life chances and opportunities for vulnerable children and families living within the Govan area.

We offer a range of integrated, early intervention services to support both children and their wider families who are experiencing multiple disadvantages, these include: Family Support, Children’s Therapeutic Services (Play Therapy), Children’s Befriending, Adult Learning, Volunteering, Adult Counselling and our recently established food project, The Govan Pantry, which has evolved from our food bank project.

Govan HELP is the only project of its kind in the south of Glasgow, linking to the cluster of primary schools and nurseries in the local area including: Riverside Primary, St Saviour’s Primary, Pirie Park Primary, Ibrox Primary and St Constantine’s’ Primary as well as the two local nurseries, Broomloan and Govan Family Learning Centre and Govan High School. The area suffers from higher-than-average rates of poverty and deprivation and our services support families to deal with a wide range of issues including poverty, abuse, domestic violence, drug and alcohol misuse, mental or physical illness, bereavement, asylum, housing and financial issues. We aim to support families before their difficulties escalate and reach crisis and to prevent the need for statutory social work intervention.

We are delighted to have been successful in securing a funding award from Cattanach Charitable Trust, over two years, to allow us to continue to expand our Family Support Project. We are seeking to recruit a Family Worker with an Early Years focus to join our team on a part time basis to continue our work supporting Early Years children and families in the Govan area.

We are looking for dynamic and passionate applicants that have prior experience of delivering similar services to support vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. We are currently growing our Family Support team and there may be opportunities to increase the hours to full time if further funding is secured.

Our Training and Volunteering project aims to improve the confidence, skills and experience of local parents to help them to gain employability skills and improve their circumstances. We have a well-established programme of Schools Volunteers, who support learning in the classrooms in five local primary schools and a recently developed training programme for volunteering within The Govan Pantry which we also operate.

Working closely in partnership with Pirie Park Primary School we are delighted to have been awarded funding from their Pupil Equity Fund to support this post for one year on a fixed term basis. The postholder will work directly with the school and wider Govan HELP team to provide support to children and families who are attending Pirie Park Primary School.
