Old's Cool Intergenerational Project Worker

The Old’s Cool project will train and support young people to facilitate intergenerational activities with older people in their community, and to record and present their work to the wider community in a medium of their choice.

This project was funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation for three years from 2015-18, culminating in the publication of the Old’s Cool toolkit (education.gov.scot/improvement/documents/cld32-olds-cool-ip.pdf#page=9). The new project is funded for three years by Young Start. It has a wider focus than the previous project, including work with young people recruited from our community based youth work services, as well as those referred through local high schools.

Youth Worker

The Citadel has a long history of providing high quality youth work services for young people in Leith.

In the past two years, the opportunity has arisen – through the Scottish Government’s Pupil Equity Fund – to extend the Citadel’s positive relationships with young people into local high schools. As a result, the Citadel now offers school based services for four primary schools and three high schools, including 1:1 support, group work programmes and family support.

The post holder will be responsible for developing a new service based in Leith Academy, with a particular focus on supporting Looked After Children to engage with their education. They will also work with Citadel colleagues to provide out of school youth work opportunities for young people of high school age, including single gender work with young men and evening youth clubs.

Activity Agreements are a national scheme to provide targeted support for young people who leave school without a positive destination in education, training or employment. The Citadel is one of 7 Activity Agreement Hubs funded by City of Edinburgh Council to provide a ‘coaching’ role for young people referred to Activity Agreements in their locality. This role includes direct 1:1 support and group work, as well as supporting young people to access opportunities outside the agency which are relevant to their interests. The post holder will also work with Citadel colleagues to provide out of school youth work opportunities for young people of high school age, including single gender work with young men and evening youth clubs.

The Citadel has a long history of strong relationships with families in the Leith community. In the past four years, this has included the development of the Citadel Families Project, which offers a range of services to the parents/carers of children under 12 attending the Citadel, including 1:1 family support and a weekly Parents Drop In.

In the past two years, the opportunity has arisen – through the Scottish Government’s Pupil Equity Fund – to extend the Citadel’s positive relationships with families into local primary schools. As a result, the Citadel now offers a range of school based services to parents/carers in four local primary schools, including 1:1 support, themed workshops/courses and family learning.

The post holder will be responsible for developing a new family support service based in Lorne Primary School, as well as working alongside colleagues in Citadel based services for families.
