We are looking for a Knowledge and Learning Manager to join our team which supports and enables colleagues in our Scotland Directorate and grantholders to reflect on, share and learn from our funding. Supporting a team to capture evidence of impact, policy and practice from internal and external sources will be the focus of this role. You’ll also provide advice to colleagues and decision makers on how funding can achieve greatest impact.

About the role

The Knowledge and Learning Manager role will lead a small, dynamic team to create and share knowledge and learning from the Fund’s work in Scotland. You will set out approaches and strategies to ensure this work is high quality and influential, and you’ll support others in the team to achieve the same high standards. Developing strategies and approaches to capture evidence and learning, knowledge of policy and good practice from internal and external sources will be vital in this role. You’ll spend time facilitating organisational and individual learning, and leading activity in themes of particular relevance. You’ll drive improvements across policy and practice, enabling learning and continuous improvement in the National Lottery Community Fund’s funding offer.

You’ll be passionate, curious and tenacious. You will be a flexible and confident manager. We are particularly interested in creating a more diverse workforce, who really understand the communities we work with.

You will have:

  • Understanding of social diversity and the range of styles to best communicate ideas and contextualise data trends.
  • Ability to influence, collaborate and build new alliances through advanced social networking skills
  • Ability to use data, strong research and evaluation skills to understand and visualise impact, engagement and reach
  • Experience in research, analysis and consultation skills, with the ability to develop criteria and principles others can follow
  • Ability to write and speak about complex ideas, information and impact in an engaging and simple way.
  • Knowledge of context for the third sector, the funding landscape and public policy and the people and organisations who are influential in this.

You will be willing to work flexibly in order to provide a high level of support to your colleagues. Some limited support for the Fund’s UK-wide work will also be expected.

About the role

We have a unique opportunity for an experienced and collaborative leader to be part of our senior management team, leading our Scotland Directorate.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the National Lottery Community Fund’s activity in Scotland, leading a team of c. 100 people, primarily based in our Glasgow office. This is a pivotal role, engaging at the most senior level with a broad range of stakeholders including leaders across the voluntary public and private sectors.

You will be responsible for supporting and advising funding decisions and recommending future portfolio direction, working closely with colleagues across the Fund to ensure that our ambition to put ‘People in the Lead’ is realised.

As a Director at the Fund, you’ll need to view things from a broad perspective, demonstrating a wide and deep understanding of our work across Scotland and the UK as a whole. An inspiring leader, you’ll play a key role in shared responsibility for the Fund’s strategy, working closely with your colleagues to implement our strategic operating plan, and initiatives. You will be adept at skilfully handling competing priorities and operational challenges, assessing and managing risk, and influencing and communicating our vision both across the Fund, and externally.

Scope of the role

  • 18/19 grants awarded = £41.7m
  • 19/20 grant funding budget = £50.7m
  • 19/20 operational budget = £2.97m
  • Team of 95 team members based in Glasgow office
  • UK travel as required

About you

You will be a strategic thinker and persuasive negotiator who understands the broader political landscape, exercising sensitive judgement in response.

Essential Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience operating in a leadership role
  • Experience of managing a substantial operating budget
  • Able to demonstrate effective leadership and development of management teams
  • Experience of strategic partnership working and stakeholder management, including excellent influencing and negotiating skills
  • Outstanding analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to work across and within complex governance structures
  • Experience and understanding of the third sector in Scotland, the wider political and regulatory environment in Scotland and across the whole UK
  • Credible and able to command respect internally and externally, while demonstrating the gravitas and decision making necessary to deliver change
