Since 1985 Freedom from Torture has been the only UK human rights organization dedicated to treating and supporting torture survivors who seek refuge in the UK. We do this primarily through psychological therapies but also services which document torture forensically, practical legal and welfare support and creative groups.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as scores of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.

About the role

Legal Advisors at Freedom from Torture deliver expert, detailed, advice to treatment clients and their clinicians on all areas of asylum and immigration law. There is a particular focus on complex, appeals rights exhausted cases where there is a risk of detention, and on supporting clients who are unrepresented. Legal Advisors review evidence produced by clinicians for use in clients’ asylum and immigration cases, ensuring that it complies with the standards required of a professional witness. Legal Advisors are also responsible for delivering internal and external training on a range of legal issues affecting torture survivors within the immigration and asylum system in the UK.

We are seeking to recruit a Legal Advisor for our Glasgow centre, who is a Scottish qualified legal professional with experience of advising on immigration and asylum matters within the Scottish legal system, and who could attend our Glasgow centre at least once every fortnight.

About you

​You will be a legal professional qualified to practice in Scotland, with expertise in immigration and asylum law, particularly in relation to the legal protections available to survivors of torture. You will have experience of advising and representing clients in the Tribunals and Courts, including in judicial review claims. You will be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with people who have experienced trauma, and will be able to build professional relationships with a variety of colleagues both internally and externally. You will share our commitment to working with and empowering people who have experienced torture.

In return, we offer a competitive package, with a generous 30-day annual leave entitlement, and 6% employer pension contribution (minimum 1% employee contribution).

Would you like to use your clinical psychology skills to provide tailored psychological therapies to help improve the lives and wellbeing of survivors of torture and organised violence?

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join our innovative and friendly multidisciplinary team, situated at our Glasgow Centre. Our team of experienced clinicians offer a range of specialist therapy interventions, to survivors of torture and organised violence, on an individual and group therapy basis. The interventions equip survivors with the resolve to deal with the physical and psychological impacts of their experiences. Throughout the rehabilitative journey, we closely monitor the impact of interventions as it relates to each survivor using specifically designed Outcome Tools, which in turn assist in ensuring that the survivors ultimately receive the best treatment possible.

To be successful in this role you must be qualified in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, (a doctorate or equivalent in either discipline would be advantageous). It’s also key to this role that you’re able to be compassionate and sensitive to the experiences of the survivors. You must have demonstrable professional experience of at least one evidence based approach to trauma therapy including trauma focused CBT, NET and EMDR, sufficient to be able to deploy this model clinically and determine appropriate intervention pathways. Additionally you must be an accredited member of a relevant professional body.

Freedom from Torture is looking for a Clinical Services Administrator to join our team in our Glasgow centre. This is an exciting chance to join us as we place survivor empowerment and movement building at the heart of our next four-year strategy.

About the role

You will provide administrative support to the Scotland Clinical Service, which provides assessment and treatment to individuals, young people, children and families who have survived torture. You will be part of a small team of Clinical Administrators who ensure consistency and continuity of administrative support to the Clinical Service at all times. The administrative team support all clinical services within the Scotland centre including the referral intake panel, therapy teams, health assessment and pain management service, care coordination service and interpreter bookings process.

About you

  • You must have experience of working with administrative systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • It’s essential that your administrative experience was gained within a mental health, clinical, or similar support service setting.
  • A key part of your role will require you to show support to colleagues and keep others informed of issues that affect them.
  • To be successful in this role you must have the ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, and devise and implement simple systems and administrative procedures.
  • You must recognise and value diversity and be willing and able to work effectively in a multi-cultural and linguistically diverse environment.

Care Coordinator

We have an exciting opportunity for a Care Coordinator to support in our clinical service delivery. Many of our clients have complex needs and this role ensures that clients acquire the support they need to receive multi-agency services.

About the role

The role involves assessment, care planning and provision of stabilisation support to our most complex clients receiving our services. Working together with our therapists, and legal and welfare staff as part of a truly multi-disciplinary team, the ideal candidate will have prior experience of working in mental health/ social care settings and a passion for working with asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture.

This is a pivotal role in the support of pain management strategies for our clients, which involves linking with, GPs, community physio services and running and facilitating 1:1 and group psychological pain management interventions alongside your colleagues. This is an exciting development within the organisation and so we envisage the post holder contributing to implement the national strategy as well as shaping the delivery within the Glasgow Centre.

About you

You will be a registered Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist with significant experience of working in the mental health sector, in addition to having substantial post registration experience. You will possess advanced assessment skills, and be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of evidence based assessments and interventions. If you have experience of working with Interpreters and with refugees or asylum seekers, it would be advantageous.
