Chaplain to Older People

  • Full time
  • £23,660
  • Edinburgh
  • Closing 30th September 2022

St Thomas’ is a vibrant and welcoming church located in Edinburgh’s Western suburbs. We are part of the Evangelical Alliance and seek to spread the Good News of the Gospel both within the Church family and to the wider community. It is hoped that the successful applicant will become a regular member of our congregation.

This exciting position will promote the spiritual and emotional welfare of older people both within the church and the wider community, including those living in residential care homes and sheltered housing complexes, and offers support to their relatives and carers.

It is intended that the Chaplain will reach out to all, whether of Christian faith, other faith or none and a feature of the work could be in developing links with many of the clubs where older people gather. An important part of the work will be the development of services of worship adapted to meet the range of needs of those who would wish to participate.

The increasing development of housing for older people in the West of Edinburgh, has led to a realization of the need to train and enable volunteers to support this work. The successful applicant will therefore be able to build, lead and develop a team of volunteers to support them in this ministry. This is a real opportunity for the right person to take God’s Word to the wider community and build a lasting legacy.

The holder of this new position will be an important and integral member of the staff team of St Thomas’ Church. They will meet with our senior pastor at least twice a month and with the staff team every fortnight.

We are also keen to explore building relationship with existing networks in this vital area of caring for older people. One avenue for this might be the ‘Anna Network’

It is an occupational requirement for the person appointed to be a professing and practising Christian, lay or ordained whose beliefs align with those of our church. (Equality Act 2010.)
