About The Compassionate Friends
The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a national charity founded over 50 years ago providing peer support to bereaved parents, siblings (18 years+) and grandparents whose child has died at any age and from any cause. We also provide information on parental and sibling bereavement to professionals and other organisations.
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our charity – without our dedicated team of volunteers we would not be able to support, comfort and offer hope to bereaved parents and their families in the way that we do. Our volunteer team are all bereaved parents, siblings or grandparents themselves and offer support one-to-one, by facilitating support groups, through weekend gatherings and retreats, and more.
About the role
Our charity is growing and we are looking for an exceptional additional member of staff to support and coordinate our existing volunteers in Scotland and Northern Ireland, help in developing the reach and quality of peer support services of our charity in these regions and to recruit, train and inspire new volunteers from our charity membership base and beyond.
You will manage appropriate volunteer recruitment procedures, provide communication, support, training and information to volunteers and be inspiring and motivating volunteers to offer the very best quality of peer support. You will be working cooperatively with the charity’s volunteer team and a range of staff colleagues. Part of your role will be networking with other organisations and professionals in the region working in the field of bereavement.
About the person
The successful candidate will be able to prioritise a varied workload and manage their time effectively. It is essential that you have excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to listen effectively and sensitively and pay attention to detail. You will also be able to build successful relationships with volunteers, have an understanding of peer-to-peer support and the training and support volunteers require to be effective and feel valued. A degree of flexibility is highly desirable. You will be supported by the CEO and other colleagues, however this post also requires someone who is able to manage responsibility, and who is confident working independently. You will probably have some experience of managing and/or coordinating volunteers or employees in a charity or business. Ideally you will be a bereaved parent, or have a high degree of empathy with bereaved parents.
We would be pleased to hear from applicants who may not have all the experience and skills for the position currently, but demonstrate aptitude and willingness to transfer previous work experience and general life skills to take on this role and learn on the job.
