The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home (EDCH) is Scotland’s oldest independent dog and cat rescue organisation and it cares for almost 1,000 dogs and 300 cats every year.  To support its charitable work, it also provides boarding facilities and last year looked after almost 3,000 boarding animals.  The Home is a well-established part of Edinburgh’s history and is a highly respected organisation.  It is also one of the founder members of The Association of Dogs and Cats Homes.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has been a safe haven for dogs and cats since 1883, and still rescues over a thousand lost or abandoned dogs and cats every year. The Home benefits from skills and experience of our 70+ strong staff, comprised of long-serving experts and enthusiastic new talent. Our passionate team is united by the love and dedication towards the animals in our care, and the belief that any dog or cat that comes to our door, whatever the reason, should be safe, warm and well-fed.

With an experienced staff team and a highly skilled board of trustees in place the organisation is seeking to appoint a new treasurer. This position forms part of a dedicated team of trustees already in place and would help to strengthen the board and support the organisation into the future.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has an understanding of charity or similar corporate financial governance to join our Board of Trustees; to support the leadership of the charity, drive forward the organisational strategy and bring a solid networking background that can help our aims.

What you will bring

  • Qualified Accountant (ICAS/ICAEW/ACCA/CIMA/CIPA)
  • A strong understanding and experience of finance department operations, preferably with some charity experience
  • Strong communication and influencing skills at a senior level
  • Excellent networking, collaboration and engagement skills
  • Ability to think and work strategically
  • A forward thinking and positive approach to the work of the Home

The Chief Executive is the organisation's most senior member of staff and is responsible for:

  • Informing and advising the Board of Trustees on the formulation of its policies and strategies, and for the implementation of those policy and strategy decisions.
  • Directing the organisation's operations, managing its resources, compliance with legal requirements, and for ensuring good practice in all aspects of its work.
  • Raising awareness around the importance of animal welfare principles and the critical role of the Home's work in rescuing, reuniting and rehoming.
  • Developing Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home's public profile in order to position the organisation as a key centre of animal welfare excellence in dog and cat rehoming.
  • Acting as a strong figurehead for the charity; a positive ambassador with external partners and a positive leader and role model for employees and volunteers.
