We’re looking for a skilled, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Policy and Influencing team as our Public Affairs and Campaigns Officer in Scotland.

Reporting to the Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager, and working very closely with the nation-specific Policy and Influencing Lead, you will deliver our organisation’s integrated public affairs and campaigning activity for Scotland. You will plan, develop and deliver effective and strategic influencing activity to help achieve our team objectives on key issues impacting people affected by stroke.

Key responsibilities will include:

• delivering public affairs activity and stakeholder engagement to support the organisation’s influencing priorities

• tracking and logging stakeholder contact and take primary responsibility for the management of political stakeholders

• providing political monitoring and horizon scanning

• planning and implementing campaigns and advocacy activity – both online and offline - that help to secure long-term improvements for those affected by stroke

• attending, and supporting others to attend, meetings and events representing the Stroke Association, including developing high-quality briefings

• spending a significant proportion of their time supporting UK-wide public affairs and campaigns activity too

You will have:

• Some experience of national or local level influencing, campaigning and advocacy

• A solid understanding of the Scottish political and health context

• Experience of undertaking policy analysis and horizon-scanning

• And ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of developing briefings for a range of audiences

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Engagement team in Scotland.

Reporting to the Engagement Lead for Scotland, the Engagement Officer will work with colleagues across Scotland to deliver our outreach activity, including supporting the development of the Stroke Group Network, and building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the community including NHS and third sector partners, stroke survivors and carers.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Support our volunteer network in the locality
• Build and maintain key relationships with local partners and stakeholders
• Enable peer support and self-sustaining stroke communities to flourish in the locality
• Provide management support to volunteers including initial recruitment
• Support delivery of a localised approach to addressing health inequalities

You will have experience/understanding of:

• Managing and developing volunteers
• Working in partnership with other organisations, ideally in voluntary, health and social care
• Experience of engaging and influencing local decision making
• Developing support using co-production with people with lived experience of Stroke
• Supporting groups and developing networks

The ability to travel extensively across the local area is essential to be able to fulfil the requirements of the role.

*Must be able to travel independently to carry out the requirements of the post without always relying on public transport*

This role underpins a partnership with the Scottish Government to help reduce the incidence of stroke, heart disease and diabetes in Scotland. The successful applicant will be employed by the Stroke Association but will work directly with policy teams in the Scottish Government to enhance the strategic approach to preventing cardiovascular

disease (CVD) in Scotland, and in particular to:

· Engage colleagues across government, the NHS, the third sector and academic research to improve detection, diagnosis and management of risk factors including hypertension and atrial fibrillation

· Inform ongoing policy and programmes in relation to stroke prevention and risk reduction

You will have a proven record of developing briefing materials, policy recommendations and reports; and of developing strong working relationships with stakeholders. You will also have an excellent understanding of the political landscape in Scotland, ideally in relation to health services.

This role will be employed by the Stroke Association but will involve working internally within the Scottish Government.

Stroke is a huge part of the health and social care landscape in Scotland, one of the main causes of death and the biggest cause of adult disability. Yet stroke does not get the priority attention it deserves.

This new role is central to our ambition for the Stroke Association to be an effective champion for stroke. There has been much progress at national level, and the ambition and vision for stroke now more closely match the need. But stroke care and services are determined and delivered at local level and so we need to organise, to engage and to influence at health board level too.

To enhance our engagement and influence with local health care systems, to bring about real change for people affected by stroke, the successful candidate will:

• Work with colleagues across our policy, engagement and communications functions to adapt the issues we work on to match local needs and opportunities
• Collate and curate local area profiles, enabling us to identify the particular issues, needs and opportunities at health board level
• Map and co-ordinate our network of local stakeholders; and
• Help us build a more planned and strategic approach to influencing local health and social care delivery

Our Scotland influencing team are looking for someone with an enthusiasm for influencing and campaigning and willingness to develop the skills needed in the role, to help drive forward our influencing aims.

Reporting to the Public Affairs and Campaigns Officer, the Public Affairs and Campaigns Assistant will provide support to the wider influencing team in Scotland and, occasionally the wider public affairs and campaigns team. This is a perfect role for someone who is really keen to start their career in public affairs and campaigns.

Key responsibilities will include:

• monitoring political developments, and keeping colleagues informed of changes and opportunities that affect our work
• recording and tracking stakeholder contact
• attend, and support stroke survivors and colleagues to attend, meetings and events, including developing briefings
• support stroke survivors and the wider stroke community to campaign for improvements in stroke care, including creating online campaign actions
• working collaboratively with public affairs and campaigns colleagues across the UK

Skills the role will help you to develop:

Location: Homebased Scotland however, Occasional travel will be required as part of this role (May include team meetings or other work related meetings).
