Current vacancies

We are looking to appoint 8 Registered Teachers and Lay persons, who are independent of the GTC Scotland Council, to the above positions.

The role of the Appointments Committee is to:

  • recruit and select Lay Council members and Education Panel members; and
  • adjudicate any membership disqualification, removal or suspension issues in respect of Council member or Panel appointee positions.

Term of Appointment

4 years

Commitment

From February to mid-June 2020 – a time commitment of approximately 9 days will be associated with an initial appointment round. It is likely that this will include:

  • an induction session and initial meeting on 17 February 2020 (1 day)
  • shortlisting and interviews in early March 2020.

From July 2020 onwards – the time commitment will reduce and will vary from year to year depending on the level of activity required. It could be as little as 1 day or involve no time commitment at all depending on whether or not any interim appointment rounds or any membership matters arise to be addressed by the Appointments Committee. A further appointment round is anticipated in 2021 which could involve a time commitment of up to 4 days.

It is expected that you will set aside time to read agenda papers in advance of meetings and will participate actively in meetings and interviews.

Compensation Payment and Expenses

In accordance with the GTC Scotland Member Expense and Compensation Policy:

  • Compensation payment will be made at £75 per half day (up to 3.5 hours) for work undertaken as part of the Appointments Committee member role where this results in an individual being unable to undertake alternative remunerated employment or a cost for teacher supply cover is incurred by their employer.
  • Reasonable expenses will be paid.

Membership of the Appointments Committee is not a position of employment and Appointments Committee members are not subject to employment law.

We are seeking to appoint a pool of 30 Education Panel Members comprising a mix of Registered Teachers and Lay Members).

The role involves serving as a member of GTC Scotland's Education Panels which have responsibility for:

  • ITE Accreditation
  • Excellence in Professional Learning Awards
    • Schools and Learning Communities
    • Organisations
  • Professional Recognition
  • Professional Update Validation Colleges
  • Professional Update Revalidation Local Authorities
  • This post is a public appointment, rather than a position of employment.

Terms of Employment: Four Years from 2 April 2020.

Time Commitment: Approximately 10 to 15 days per year. Work will be based in various locations across Scotland.

You will be expected to serve on at least 10 panels each year and attend professional learning sessions as required. A mandatory induction event in scheduled to take place in the GTCS offices in Edinburgh on Friday 3 April 2020.

Compensation Payment & Expenses: A compensation payment plus reasonable expenses will be provided for Council member attendance in accordance with our Member Expenses and Compensation Scheme Policy. Compensation is currently £75 for each half-day (up to 3.5 hours) and is intended to compensate members of any financial loss incurred as a result of their attendance; it is not an attendance fee.

The role involves servicing as a member of GTC Scotland's governing Council which has responsibility for:

  • setting the strategic direction and policy of GTC Scotland; and
  • ensuring that GTC Scotland fulfils its statutory functions in compliance with the Public Services Reform (GTC Scotland) Order 2011 and other relevant statutes, with regard to the public interest and in line with best regulatory practice.

This post is a public appointment, rather than a position of employment.

Terms of Appointment: Four years from 2 April 2020.

Time Commitment: Approximately 8 to 12 days per year.

You will be expected to attend four Council meetings a year and may be required to serve on up to two committees.

Committees may meet between four and six times a year.

Compensation Payment & Expenses: A compensation payment, plus reasonable expenses, will be provided for Council member attendance in accordance with our Members Expenses and Compensation Scheme Policy.
