Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs (Scottish Families) provides support to families affected by the substance misuse of a loved one and raises awareness of the issues affecting them.  We offer families a variety of services including a national helpline, one-to-one and groups support, training opportunities and community engagement activities to help families cope with their loved one’s substance misuse, rebuild relationships and improve their wellbeing.

Connecting Families Development Officer

This post will support the delivery of Scottish Families’ strategic outcome that ‘Families are a movement for change’, including ongoing delivery of our Connecting Families programme through engagement, design, delivery and evaluation. The post will help increase capacity and create more opportunities for families to influence sustainable change in relation to substance use and recovery. The Connecting Families programme is dynamic and is co-produced with family members, however the role will include initiatives such as our Family Recovery College, tackling stigma, promoting family rights, engaging with peer-led family support groups and networks, and running family and community events.

The post-holder will be responsible for developing and delivering our national Connecting Families programme, where families drive the development of a families’ recovery movement, including co-producing projects, events and initiatives. This includes supporting the delivery of learning programmes to promote family recovery; engaging and supporting families; supporting families’ voices to be directly heard through a range of platforms; facilitating family engagement and influence in policy, research and service development; and working closely with other social movements, including recovery movements.

The post will be based at Edward House, Glasgow (Scottish Families’ national office) with extensive travel around Scotland. (Note that currently all staff are home working due to the COVID outbreak and there is currently no confirmed date for the re-opening of the national office, based on the Scottish Government guidance). The post-holder will be expected to work some evenings and occasional weekends. Due to the nature of this post, access to a car is essential.

Family Support Assistant - Forth Valley Family Support Service

Helpline Support Assistant

We are seeking a new Board member!

Scottish Families supports anyone who is concerned about someone else’s drug or alcohol use. We were established in 2003 by families themselves, who came together to support each other and to campaign for recognition. Our five Outcomes are that Families are Supported, Included, Recognised, Connected to Communities and a Movement for Change.

We are a national charity based in Glasgow and working right across Scotland. We provide a free national Helpline, one-to-one Telehealth support, bereavement counselling for anyone affected by drug or alcohol related death, and local family support services. We also deliver workforce development, a Connecting Families programme, communications and policy/campaigning work.

We are Scotland’s leading charity supporting families affected by substance use, and are recognised by the Scottish Government as one of their Nationally Commissioned Organisations (NCOs) for alcohol and drugs. We are funded through a combination of Government grants, commissioned services, charitable trusts and fundraising.

To strengthen our Board membership, we are seeking an additional Board member with experience, skills and expertise in tackling inequality and promoting diversity. This follows on from a recent review of our approach to equality and diversity at Scottish Families.

You should be available to attend quarterly meetings. Board meetings are currently being held online via Zoom, but in future we plan to return to a combination of online and in person meetings (at our national office in Glasgow city centre). Befriending and Volunteering Assistant

The post-holder will support the recruitment, training and ongoing support and supervision of volunteer befrienders and wider volunteers, as well as the development and delivery of the befriending project and wider volunteer programme with input from family members. The role involves identifying and promoting befriending and wider volunteering opportunities with Scottish Families, and supporting the development and implementation of a process for identifying adult family members (aged 16+) in need of befriending support and matching these with suitable volunteer befrienders; and for matching wider volunteers with appropriate opportunities.

We are seeking a Policy and Research Assistant to support the policy and research functions within Scottish Families, led by the CEO, aiming to create insight, grow the evidence base, and deliver impact and change to improve outcomes for families affected by alcohol and drugs. The role includes internal and external work with the Scottish Families Team and Board, family members, government, public bodies, politicians, third sector and academic partners.

The post will be based at Edward House, Glasgow – Scottish Families’ national office. (Note that staff are currently working between home and office). The post is a national support role and so involves some travel and very occasional out-of-hours working. The post is part of the Scottish Families’ staff team and is supervised by the CEO.

The post-holder will provide policy and research support to members of Scottish Families staff team, relevant to their own roles, including responding to staff requests for support, and facilitating our ‘embedded evaluation’ approach within the organisation; develop evidence-based policy papers and responses (including government and other consultations), including gathering and representing the views and experiences of families; support internal thematic and short-life working groups with monitoring and recording their activities; contribute to the development and delivery of new quantitative and qualitative research projects led by Scottish Families and partner organisations; participate in research design, data collection (including via desk research, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups etc), analysis, report-writing, and the written and verbal presentation of findings; lead our Alcohol Action Group which seeks to highlight and respond to alcohol harm in families and communities; actively participate in national and UK networks in the fields of alcohol, drugs and families; create external content such as blogs, articles and podcasts, on policy and research topics relevant to families; contribute to the development of Scottish Families Evidence Bank; and facilitate and support family engagement and influence across our policy and research work.

We are seeking applicants who have a degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional qualification; experience of producing evidence-based reports (policy and/or research-based) and quantitative and qualitative research design, delivery, data analysis and interpretation; knowledge of issues for families affected by substance use; an investigative and inquiring mind; the ability to review, analyse, interpret and prioritise complex data and information; and excellent report writing and IT literacy skills.

Family Support Assistant (0.6 Fte) – Forth Valley

We are seeking a part-time (21 hours per week) Family Support Assistant to join our team. This post will support the delivery of the Forth Valley Family Support Service. This includes delivering community-based services that specifically address the needs of families affected by alcohol and drugs.

The post-holder will be responsible for delivering a range of family support services which address the specific needs of families and support groups, including evidence-based interventions, with the assistance and support of the Family Support Development Officer – Forth Valley. This includes facilitating family support groups and working with individuals on a one-to-one basis; providing advocacy to support groups and individual family members, and actively promoting family recovery and family inclusive practice.

The post has a Forth Valley wide remit and will involve significant travel throughout the region and some to our offices in Glasgow. It is expected that the post holder will be required to work some evenings and occasional weekends. Due to the nature of this post, access to a car is essential. This post will be part of Scottish Families’ staff team and be supervised by the Family Support Development Officer – Forth Valley.

We are seeking a full-time Business Support Assistant to join our team. This post will provide a full range of business and administrative support to Scottish Families’ staff across the whole organisation, in liaison with the PA to the CEO/Business Support Assistant.

The post-holder will be responsible for assisting in the development, maintenance and implementation of organisational and office systems, including our Salesforce Client Record Management (CRM) system; supporting financial processing systems; providing business support for the Scottish Families team; assisting with event management, including planning and delivery; liaising with partner organisations and family members affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use; and maintaining high levels of confidentiality and discretion.

The post is based at Edward House, Glasgow – Scottish Families’ national office. (Note that staff are currently working between home and office). The post is a national support role and so involves occasional travel and very occasional out-of-hours working for meetings and events. The post is part of the Scottish Families’ staff team, is supervised by the CEO, and involves close liaison with the PA to the CEO/Business Support Assistant.

We are seeking applicants with a minimum of SVQ Level 3 in Business Administration or relevant discipline, with experience of managing corporate correspondence; financial processing, systems and record keeping; office management and event management (planning and delivery). Candidates should have outstanding IT skills including full range of Microsoft packages, be able to produce high quality reports, presentations and other documents; work on own initiative with excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload. Candidates must be able to deal appropriately with confidential and sensitive information, and work to a high standard within deadlines and with minimal supervision. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

The post-holder will be responsible for developing and delivering a new national Family Inclusive Practice workforce programme to external partners, including the alcohol and drug service workforce. The programme aims to embed new practices in alcohol and drug services to allow services to effectively implement new ways of working with clients and their families in line with national policy commitments for families affected by drug and alcohol use in Scotland. The role will also design, deliver and evaluate learning and development activities, including Scottish Families current programme of workforce learning & development; develop and create e-learning including writing content; gather learning from the delivery of the Family Inclusive Practice programme to develop and create Family Inclusive Practice implementation kit; and develop a clear and meaningful national definition of Family Inclusive Practice.

The is a national post which includes travel across Scotland to deliver learning and development activities. Hours worked will be in line with delivery requirements, including evenings and occasional weekends when required. Support Assistant - Young People (Routes)

Due to the nature of this post, access to a car is essential. There will be a close working relationship with young people, schools and local partner agencies in East and West Dunbartonshire. This post will be part of Scottish Families’ staff team and be managed by the Senior Family Support Development Officer – Young People. We are seeking applicants who are educated to HNC level, have a vocational qualification (level 3) or relevant professional qualification, along with experience of working with a range of children and young people, identifying and managing risk, and assessing needs. Applicants should have knowledge of issues for young people affected by family substance use, an understanding of child protection and safeguarding, and understanding of emotional and development issues for children and young people. We are seeking an applicant who can build rapport, positively engage and support young people, as well as having the ability to listen and talk to young people from differing abilities, understanding and backgrounds.
