Top job! Chief Executive Officer

  • Full time
  • £50,000 – £55,000
  • Inverness
  • Closing 21st March 2022

Calman Trust was formed in 1998 with the purpose of enabling vulnerable and disadvantaged young people aged 15-25 to experience improved life chances. We are looking for an outstanding candidate to replace our existing Chief Executive, who plans to retire this year, having led the organisation since its formation. We are seeking an inspirational, dynamic and supportive Chief Executive to lead our exceptional staff team.

With relationship-based practice at the centre, Calman offers young people in the Highlands an individualised learning experience which is designed to enable their progression towards independent adulthood and employment, finding and keeping a home of their own and a job. This is underpinned by practical support to overcome the personal challenges that place the young person at risk of disadvantage. In our Inverness-based Café Artysans social enterprise, operated by our trading subsidiary, a quality catering service offers simultaneously a transformational experience of the world of work. Here, young people who arrive with little personal agency ‘learn by doing’, their progress robust, meaningful and sustained because it is owned and understood.

You will have responsibility for providing strategic direction to the organisation, maintaining the delivery of a safe, impactful, accountable youthwork service and for delivering continued growth of our enterprising activity with professionalism, enthusiasm, drive and sensitivity. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the organisation in addressing the needs of young people in a post-pandemic world and in adapting to a post-Brexit financial environment.

It is planned that the existing CEO will overlap with the new CEO to assist through this period of adjustment.

The successful candidate must have sound leadership experience, knowledge of the voluntary sector, awareness of relevant legislation, entrepreneurial capability, and excellent financial management skills, including ideally securing and managing major grants. You will be a confident and passionate communicator, with an ability to create positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and partners. Previous Chief Executive experience is not essential.

PVG membership is required, as is the ability to drive.

Training Manager

  • Full time
  • £35,000
  • Inverness-based, with some travel within the Inner Moray Firth area
  • Closing 31st May 2021

Calman Trust, based in Inverness, works with young people aged 15-25 who experience difficulty in the transition to independent living or employment, and are not yet ready to benefit from formal learning or training programmes. We are looking to recruit as Training Manager someone experienced in youthwork, informal learning or education, who is inspired by the belief that with a clear roadmap and support to overcome their personal challenges, young people can achieve great things.

Recognising that learning through practice and reinforcement is meaningful and embedded, Calman Trust takes a ‘learn by doing’ approach. This applies from the earliest stages of the young person’s involvement with the organisation, learning to travel independently, through to their participation in job roles in our Inverness social enterprise Café Artysans.

The Training Manager will be responsible for implementing the Calman model, managing our Training Team to deliver a structured programme through which any young person coming through the organisation has opportunity to access learning and support tailored to their needs and capability. They must be experienced and comfortable in building a culture of relational youthwork. Our purpose is that young people can reach their potential, living more independently and progressing towards further training, education or employment with the ability to sustain this.

Top job! Deputy Chief Executive

  • Full time
  • £40,000
  • Inverness-based, with some travel within the Inner Moray Firth area
  • Closing 29th April 2021

Calman Trust, based in Inverness, provides a range of support and learning opportunities for young people aged 15-25 who experience difficulty in the transition to independent living or the world of work, and who are not yet ready or able to benefit from more formal learning or training programmes. Experience convinces us that, with support to overcome the challenges encountered on the way to independent adulthood, young people are capable of sustaining their chosen work and a home of their own.

Our growing Café Artysans trading operation, delivered through our Calman enterprise subsidiary, is a vital source of independent income, whilst also providing experience in a real-life business through which young people can develop their readiness for work by working alongside industry professionals. Every business is a training opportunity, so the further growth of the commercial operation will strengthen the whole Calman Trust operation and the opportunities we can offer to young people, especially important in the post-Covid environment.

It is an essential principle of the organisation that young people should have a voice, be given the time they need to understand and to be understood, and enabled to choose and plan their future. The Deputy Chief Executive will be expected to embrace these principles, which are the key to sustained change, and the values of Calman Trust as an organisation that is focused on solutions and committed to enabling our people to achieve their best.

Role

The further development of the Café Artysans business is a cornerstone of the organisation’s strategic plan, and we are looking to appoint a Deputy Chief Executive. The role is to work with the Calman Chief Executive and the Boards of Calman Trust and Calman Enterprise with responsibility initially to manage and grow the commercial business, improving turnover and efficiency of the whole Café Artysans operation, and adding further outlets and products. Currently, this operation comprises 60 covers, a busy catering service, plus one additional outlet and one in the pipeline. In the immediate future there is to be significant internal refurbishment, in preparation for accessing wider markets.

Beyond this, the further development of our enterprise activity is important both in financial terms and in enabling the continuous improvement to the quality and range of training opportunities that the organisation can offer young people, and as such a priority attached to the role.

It is anticipated that the role will evolve over time to incorporate a lead role in supporting the CEO to deliver the consolidation and growth plan of the overarching Calman Trust charity and our work with young people, including through identification of additional grant income, viable contract opportunities, partnerships and mergers.
