Smarter Choices, Smarter Places is Paths for All’s behaviour change programme is aimed at getting people to walk, cycle and wheel more for short journeys and adopt sustainable travel options for longer journeys. Currently in its seventh year of funding from Transport Scotland, the Programme provides grants to public and third sector organisations, encourages the sharing of good practice and promotes collaborative work at local, regional and national level. Smarter Choices, Smarter Places is used by all Scotland’s local authorities and funds many other third and public sector organisations to deliver locally specific initiatives that meet local needs.

The Development officer, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Open Fund has a key role supporting the Senior Development officer and wider SCSP team ensuring that the Programme continues to deliver on its aims and objectives while also expanding its reach to new audiences. The successful candidate will be required to work as part of a team supporting and encouraging projects and applications which will encourage and support behaviour change towards more sustainable forms of transport. Grant management and application assessment will form some of the key day to day tasks associated with this role and its therefore important that applicants have a passion for encouraging behaviour change, for building working relationships and for supporting and highlighting good practice. Our Walking for Health team is looking for a Development Officer to support our programme of training, designed to provide volunteer Walk Leaders and project staff with the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead and deliver Health Walks in their community. If you are passionate about empowering communities to improve health, tackle inactivity and health inequalities and positively impact well-being on a population-wide scale, this could be the job for you!

Day to day tasks for the postholder will include supporting the smooth running of our busy training programme, managing a community of practice for our trainers, and promoting uptake of strength and balance activity with our target audiences.

Reporting to Paths for All’s Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the leadership and management of the operational and financial affairs of the charity and champion its vision for a happier, healthier Scotland where physical activity improves quality of life and wellbeing for all. Leading by example and ensuring Paths for All maintains its strong culture of openness, collaboration and partnership working you will maintain and enhance the organisation’s reputation, credibility and profile, re-affirming its position as a strong and recognised voice for the promotion of physical activity, active travel and fit for purpose environments in Scotland, directly influencing the development and delivery of national policy.

A proactive, solutions focused and visionary leader with experience of managing, motivating, and developing staff both individually and collectively and a proven track record in effectively managing resources and budgets to deliver long term financial sustainability and value for money. You will be an accomplished communicator with credibility when engaging with internal and external stakeholders coupled with the ability to create alliances and encourage collaboration with other organisations.

The successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate:

• Experience of leading both strategic and operational planning processes

• A good understanding of positive governance; ideally with direct experience of working with a voluntary board

• Strong political acuity coupled with knowledge of, or the ability to quickly gain an understanding of, the wider policy landscape within which Paths for All operates

• A good understanding of how advocacy can change public perception and influence change and policy agendas

Welcoming, safe, inclusive, and accessible outdoor environments can improve our physical, mental and social health by allowing people to be physically active outdoors and helping people to connect with and get closer to nature.

This role offers the rare opportunity to lead our Active Environments Team and help empower communities in Scotland to take the lead in creating, promoting, and maintaining safe, welcoming community paths and active routes for everyone. Through experience of programme management and strategic development there will be a specific focus on community engagement, climate adaptation and nature connectedness. This role will further develop these areas of work and support the team to provide technical guidance training, advice and funding opportunities to external audiences.

The Ian Findlay Path Fund (IFPF) is an exciting new £1.5M funding programme, named after our late Chief Officer, that will launch this summer.

The fund will ensure that local path networks and routes are available and suitable for daily travel needs of the communities they serve. It will help build in climate resilience to local path management and fund path development and improvement to remove barriers and increase walking, wheeling and active travel within and between communities.

The Senior Development Officer, Ian Findlay Path Fund has a key role in ensuring that this new grant programme becomes well established and delivers on its aims and objectives. The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate strong organisational and communication skills alongside a commitment and passion for encouraging and developing community development and behaviour change linked to the sustainable transport sector.

This new grant fund is a significant investment in active and sustainable travel. Therefore, the role has responsibility to demonstrate how our funding contributes to Scotland’s climate change and public health priorities whilst also supporting communities and organisations across Scotland to build back after the COVID pandemic.

Senior Development Officer - Education (Smarter Choices, Smarter Places)

A key element of this work involves encouraging and supporting people to walk and or travel sustainably as part of their everyday journeys.

The Smarter Choices Smarter Places programme is supported by Transport Scotland and encourages behaviour change to more sustainable forms of transport. We are scoping an addition element encouraging more delivery in schools and education settings and supporting increased capacity in Education departments and active travel delivery partners with a view to increasing the numbers of children walking and travelling actively to school.

The Senior Development Officer has a key role in ensuring that the scoping exercise is carried out in partnership with delivery partners and education professionals. They are responsible for delivery of a report and recommendations that can shape future funding and delivery in this area. The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate strong organisational, partnership and communication skills alongside a commitment and passion for encouraging and developing behaviour change towards walking and sustainable travel within the school and education setting.

It is expected that this scoping exercise will lead to a new grant fund increasing capacity and reach within schools and education settings in financial year 2023-24.

With a high percentage of the existing Local Authority fund already being used to support work in schools the Senior development officer will also be responsible for supporting the work of the Local Authority team within the Smarter Choices Smarter Places programme.

The Communications Officer will be an excellent writer with a flair for producing engaging content for a range of platforms and seeking stories which exemplify the success of our active travel behaviour change funding programme, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places.

The successful candidate will enjoy working creatively and thrive in a busy environment involved in a wide range of activities. They will have the opportunity to input to the development and delivery of our social marketing campaigns aiming to get Scotland walking.

The person should have the ability to form strong relationships with our key stakeholders, including partners, funders and the media, and work collaboratively to ensure our communications have greater reach and impact.

Day to day tasks for the postholder will include identifying, writing and disseminating PR news stories, monitoring and populating social media, organising events, and producing email marketing campaigns and newsletters.
