Passing the Baton is Bethany’s Befriending Service operating in Edinburgh. Our aim is to befriend people back into the community. We befriend adults who may feel lonely and socially isolated and may also struggle with homelessness.

The principal role of the Coordinator will be to facilitate groups that include the Men’s Group and the Job & Volunteering Group. In addition to the groups, the Facilitator will also befriend and organise befriending relationships for people referred to the service.

Overnight Welcome Centre Day Shift Team Leader

Bethany Christian Trust has operated a Care Shelter in Edinburgh every winter since 1996, providing emergency shelter to people who would otherwise be sleeping rough. Following the Covid crisis, and in recognition that for a number of years the provision has far outstripped the traditional shelter model, Bethany’s care of people who are rough sleeping will continue in the form of an “Overnight Welcome Centre” from October till May. Guests will continue to be welcomed in, receive a hot meal and have access to support through trained staff and visiting partner agencies. The Overnight Welcome Centre will be a route for guests out of rough sleeping and into accommodation, via a variety of routes tailored to the individual.

Day Shift Team Leaders are required to coordinate and supervise a small team of City of Edinburgh Council staff during the day at the Welcome Centre, to liaise with partner support agencies that visit to support guests and to ensure the safe running of the service during the day. You will bring proven leadership experience and have excellent communication skills. You will work 12-hour shifts for 30 weeks (one week on, one week off) from 5 October 2020 to 2 May 2021. In addition, there are 8 days of training from 23 September, which you must be able to attend. Ideally, you will have an SVQ3 in Health and Social Care/Promoting Independence.

Knowledge of the service user group, good organisational, IT and admin skills are desirable. A successful candidate will be motivated to show God’s love to people who are homeless and vulnerable on our city’s streets.

Housing Officer

On the back of its success in providing supported accommodation in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dumfries Bethany Christian Trust is in the process of purchasing three properties within the Torry area of Aberdeen to develop its new Bethany Homes Aberdeen project.

We are looking for a housing officer to deliver tenancy/community support to the three individuals who will take up residence in our supported flats. The Housing Officer role will ensure the efficient outworking of tenancy management functions, including letting, inspecting and management of properties, working closely with the tenants to provide the highest level of care to deal with the day to day issues of housing management, including supporting the tenants with rent and maintenance issues, thereby maximising rental income and providing administration support as required.

The role also includes engaging with the tenants to build their self-esteem, confidence and a sense of purpose to enable people to make positive choices relating to tenancy sustainment, community engagement and the development of healthy social networks.

As part of the wider Bethany Homes Team you will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills however have the ability to work on your own and prioritise your workload; you will have experience and knowledge of the service user group and their surrounding issues relating to homelessness as well as having housing/letting management experience. Competence in the use of Microsoft office tools is essential.

We are looking for a qualified counsellor either accredited or working towards accreditation, to work within our existing therapeutic and counselling service, currently operational within a collection of schools in Glasgow and the surrounding areas, including East Ayrshire.

We engage with young people to offer professional assistance aimed at improving mental health, wellbeing and personal development. We aim to provide help in dealing with a variety of issues as well as developing personal coping strategies to ultimately reduce the risk of homelessness.

Candidates will require experience of professional counselling, a demonstrable passion for working with people from a range of backgrounds and a personal drive to see young people thrive, flourish and overcome personal challenges.

The role is open to opportunities for flexible working in conversation with the Upstream Counselling & Families Manager.

We are looking for a Project Worker, who will work as part of a team seeking to meet the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of women with multiple complex needs. As part of a team you will ensure the smooth daily running of the therapeutic centre and help to create a safe supportive caring and empowering environment for service users.

Your main tasks include managing a case-load of support clients: assisting them in their stay by key working them, assisting them set and meet goals leading to resettlement.

You will also provide appropriate emotional and practical support to service users assisting in budgeting, debt management, addiction support, household routines, arranging specific specialist help, liaising with other external agencies.

Experience of working with vulnerable and homeless people, experience of working within a team and the ability to deal appropriately with challenging behaviour are needed for the role.

SVQ3 in Social Care, Promoting Independence or equivalent as listed by SSSC as appropriate for a Housing Support Worker, or willingness to work towards this is essential.

Night Shift Worker (Bethany House)

We are looking for a Night Shift Worker who will maintain Bethany House as a safe environment for residents while promoting a caring environment through high standards of professional practice.

During the operational period of the Overnight Welcome Centre, running yearly from autumn to spring, contractual hours will increase to 39 hours per week. Once the Overnight Welcome Centre finished in spring contractual hours will reduce to 27.75 hours per week until the Care Shelter opens again in autumn.

Our Emergency Resettlement Unit is called Bethany House. It accommodates 24 men and 4 women in 6 cluster flats.

Your tasks include establishing and maintaining the general security of the building during night shift hours, in accordance with policies and procedures and accepted customs and practices; and upkeep of our 24 hours residential unit.

Experience of working with vulnerable and homeless people, experience of working within a team and an understanding of mental health issues, addiction problems and chaotic behaviour are essential for the role.
