About Start Up Stirling

Our charity began in 1994 when a group of local churches started to collect donated household goods and redistribute them to people who had been homeless and were moving into social housing. In response to growing local need we started our foodbank service in 2012 in an effort to tackling food insecurity and hunger. In 2017 we introduced an additional pilot service that offers additional practical and tailored support for people experiencing hardship in the Stirling Council area and looking beyond crisis food support.

The whole operation, including our Board of Trustees, is run by volunteers (currently around 110), supported by a small group of paid staff. We work closely with a network of around thirty-five local referral partners, including Citizens Advice Bureau, Women’s Aid, Salvation Army Rural Housing, NHS, Stirling Council and local schools to identify those people that need our support and help.

What are we looking for in a General Manager?

We are seeking an experienced, well-motivated, confident, energetic manager with proven leadership qualities and a commitment to helping Start Up achieve its charitable objectives. The successful candidate will be someone who can manage the day to day operations in an efficient and effective manner, making appropriate use of task delegation and team leading, whilst also contributing to the continued development and management of key partner/funder relationships which underpin the charity’s efforts to support to people across Stirling and the surrounding areas.

The successful candidate will be someone who can coordinate our food bank services in an efficient and effective manner, and also collaborate with our partner organisation Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Stirling and other local organisations in the development of our client support service

Client Support Worker

Main Purpose– : to break the cycle of food bank dependency by building financial capacity, energy capability and independent living skills within the target community; reducing social isolation, tackling poverty and inequality, reducing social drift, building community cohesion and developing community capacity and resilience.

Start Up Stirling is seeking to appoint an energetic and compassionate person to the role of Client Support worker, which includes supporting the expansion of the TRI (Tackling Rural Isolation) Outreach Support Service. The expanded service builds on the independent experience and learning of both Start Up Stirling and Citizen’s Advice Bureau Stirling. (CAB) This has been gained from initiatives such as CAB outreach via Stirling Council library network, reactive CAB advice at the front line of Food Bank and the Start Up Stirling’s Beyond the Food Bank group client support services.

What are we looking for in a Client Support Worker?

We are seeking a well-motivated, confident and enthusiastic individual with proven support worker skills and experience. The successful candidate will be someone who can coordinate our Client Support Services (Beyond the Food Bank) in an efficient, friendly and effective manner and work empathetically with our clients. You’ll have a sound knowledge of support work and be able to provide support in a group setting, as well as individually. You’ll support the TRI (Tackling Rural Isolation) Service working alongside our partner’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau Stirling, to achieve increased food capacity, as well as developing independent living skills, by providing bespoke advice, advocacy and support. You’ll find our work both valuable and rewarding. You’ll need to be prepared to travel frequently to the rural areas, including Callander and Killin, with access to a Start Up Stirling vehicle provided for businesses purposes. You’ll also work locally in Stirling town centre.

Essential Skills & Experience

Applicants must have previous experience of working in a support capacity role and be able to demonstrate previous experience as follows:

● Working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, including referral organisations and other partners.

● Excellent communication skills and being able to adapt effectively and as necessary

● Prioritising workload effectively, working both as a team but equally as comfortable working alone

● Sound organisational skills and demonstrate the ability to maintain and develop systems and processes relevant to the role.

● Experience both in the design and use of monitoring & evaluation systems.

● The ability to adhere to confidentiality and boundaries requirements essential to the role.

● Group delivery skills & conflict management – managing people within a group setting positively, effectively and appropriately whilst remaining calm and empathetic.

● Commit to their own personal learning and development as well as the learning and development of staff and volunteers.

● IT, use of Word, Excel & email.

● Due to the geographical nature of the role, a driving licence is essential. Candidates must hold a clean driving licence. Own vehicle is not required, access to a vehicle for business purposes will be provided.

● Due to the nature of the role Disclosure Scotland PVG membership is required

Desirable skills and experience

● Promote a positive mindset and support people experiencing difficult times in a constructive and collaborative manner.

● Previous experience of working in a fast paced, moving, working environment with competing demands in your working day.

● Assist in harnessing community engagement and assets to optimise the potential support for the charity’s efforts to alleviate hunger and food insecurity.

● Previous third sector experience or experience in a similar role.

The Client Support Worker role may include occasional evening and weekend working, typically in connection with partner and community engagement events that take place outside normal working hours.
