The Organisation

Baltic Street Adventure Playground is a playground in Dalmarnock, east Glasgow. The

playground is a permanent child-led space, run on democratic principles. It is a place where children's needs come first, and where they are encouraged and supported to take an active role in all aspects of playground life. Baltic Street is staffed by several experienced playworkers/managers/fundraiser. Everything the organisation does is supported by a volunteer team and a board of trustees.

The Role

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Early Years Worker with a passion for outdoor learning and child-led play. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team and make a positive impact on children's early development in a natural and stimulating environment.

Responsibilities

- Foster a safe and nurturing environment that encourages exploration, curiosity, and creativity in children aged 3-5 years.

- Design and implement age-appropriate activities that promote outdoor learning, nature connection, and child-led play.

- Support children in developing their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills through engaging outdoor experiences.

- Collaborate with the team to plan and deliver a curriculum that aligns with national standards and promotes holistic child development.

- Observe and assess children's progress, providing individualized support and guidance as needed.

- Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians, sharing updates on their child's development and outdoor learning experiences.

Requirements

- Minimum SVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education or equivalent qualification.

- Proven experience working in an early years setting, with a focus on outdoor learning and child-led play.

- Excellent knowledge of child development theories, outdoor education principles, and the benefits of nature-based experiences.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.

- A genuine passion for working with young children, fostering their love for the outdoors, and promoting their holistic development.

- Demonstrated ability to adapt activities and learning experiences to meet the diverse needs and abilities of children.

Preferred Qualifications:

- First Aid/CPR certification.

- Additional certifications or training related to outdoor education, forest schools, or nature-based play.

The Role

The Playworker with social media and animal care responsibilities is a new role that is very specific to the needs of our organisation.

The primary focus of your role at Baltic Street Adventure Playground will be to work collaboratively as part of a team in creating and maintaining a diverse, evolving, and enriching environment where children can freely engage in play without adult direction or fear for their own safety. You will actively contribute to the upkeep and development of the playground, ensuring that it remains a safe and stimulating space for children to explore, create, and interact. By working closely with other team members, you will support the implementation of appropriate safety measures and adhere to established guidelines to ensure the well-being of all children.

As part of your role at Baltic Street Adventure Playground, you will have the exciting opportunity to manage our social media presence and engage with our online community. A key aspect of this position involves dedicating a few hours each week to updating our social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You will be responsible for creating engaging content, sharing updates about our programs and events, and showcasing the unique experiences and adventures that take place at our playground. Additionally, you will play a vital role in monitoring and responding to messages and inquiries received through our social media channels, ensuring timely and helpful communication with our followers.

in addition to working as part of a team to maintain a diverse and safe environment for children, you will also be involved in animal care at Baltic Street Adventure Playground. This responsibility will include cleaning enclosures and ensuring that staff members are maintaining the required standards of care. While this aspect of the role won't be solely assigned to you, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the majority of the animal care tasks. This will involve regularly checking the cleanliness of the enclosures, ensuring proper feeding, and watering of the animals, and monitoring their well-being.

The Person

We are looking for an experienced, able playworker with a track record of working with children in the context urban of deprivation. A successful applicant will have demonstrable commitment to working in communities, be approachable, friendly, and practical. Detailed working knowledge of the area, the community and its specific needs and challenges is strongly preferred. The candidate should be capable and passionate about creating new opportunities for children, and capacity to be a committed and eloquent advocate for the organisation. At interview, the candidate should be able to demonstrate a deep engagement with and commitment to the organisations core principles, and good working knowledge of the culture and practice of adventure play. Due to the unique nature of the organisation, formal qualifications in play work or child care are not required, but training in relevant areas such as child-protection, first-aid and risk and safety in play are essential. Promising candidates without relevant training in essential areas will be expected to

undertake training before commencing role.

Social Media:

Experience managing social media platforms, creating engaging content, and fostering online community engagement. They should possess excellent communication skills and a good understanding of social media trends. Proficiency in platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is essential. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a consistent brand image, responding to messages, and promoting Baltic Street Adventure Playground's activities effectively.

Animal Care:

Practical experience in animal care, including cleaning enclosures and ensuring animal well-being. Attention to detail and a passion for animal welfare are crucial. Collaboration with staff to maintain cleanliness and monitor animal health is essential. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a safe environment, promoting animal well-being, and contributing to their enrichment.

Review

The Playworker with social media and animal care responsibilities will have quarterly check-in’s with The Playground manager, at which time small changes may be made to scope of the role, time allocations and responsibilities. Annual full review of job description will be undertaken together with Playground.
